It can feel uncomfortable calling a therapist and voicing that you need support. You don’t know them yet and you want to feel comfortable enough to share what you are going through. How do you determine the best fit? I’d like to help you ask the right questions to find the best therapist for you in Draper.
Are you currently accepting new clients?
It’s important to know if the therapist is accepting new clients right off the bat so you don’t find a therapist you click with that is already fully booked with a long waitlist.
What therapy services do you provide? Do you work with a certain population (e.g., children, teens, adults)?
It is best to ensure that the therapist provides the services that you are looking for (e.g., therapy for young adults with ADHD).
Have you worked with ________ (e.g., diagnosis, presenting problem, etc.) before?
This will give you some additional information on the therapist’s experience working with individuals with your current needs.
Do you provide in-person or telehealth services?
Clarify which you are looking for and ensure that the therapist currently provides services in that method.
What are your rates?
It is helpful to have a clear understanding of the rate they charge. That being said, there are multiple ways to pay for therapy (i.e., via insurance, HSA, out of pocket), so be sure to ask one (or both!) of the following questions to get more clarity on if your plan for payment lines up with the provider you are speaking to.
(Plan on paying through your insurance): Are you an In-Network-Provider with my insurance?
If you are planning to pay through your insurance, it is important to know if they are networked with your current insurance provider.
(Plan on paying out-of-pocket): Do you accept ________ (e.g., HSA, checks, American Express, etc.)? Can you print a Super Bill?
Clarify that the therapist accepts your planned form of payment. If you are not paying through insurance, there is the potential for reimbursement through your insurance company for out-of-network providers if the therapist prints a “Super Bill” receipt for you.
